What to wear to Galaxion tomorrow night...

Get ready for Vancouver's ultimate 80's pop culture event: Galaxion. Featuring DJ's TechTard, Jonny Vancouver, Maleficent & Sickbot; spinning the best 80's pop punk, new wave, retro electro and old school hip hop. Play classic arcade/console games. 2 for 1 cover for those in 80's gear. Incase you forgot what that is, or are too young to remember, let's take a stroll down memory lane, shall we?
Oh look, I conveniently found an 80's montage, complete with Rubix cube.
Like every girl, I had a crush on Robert Smith.
I really hope some B-Boys and Girls show up.

I will be wearing my Jem and the Holograms tee, of course.

To get you just a bit more excited, check out Jonny's East Van Pod Cast interview with DJ's TechTard and Maleficent. See you Saturday, July 18th at Club 23 West Cordova.

Alice in Wonderland Festival

I can't believe I missed this amazing event today at Trout Lake Park.

How fun it would have been to dress up as my favourite character and join Alice as she meets Humpty Dumpty, has Tea with the Mad Hatter, plays croquet with the Queen of Hearts, swings on the flying trapeze, and dances the Lobster Quadrille to the fabulous sounds of Toot-A-Lute, The Carnival Band, Gamelan Madu Sari, and the End Tree.

My friend Diana did an excellent job of dressing up as Alice with her white dress from Zara and striped socks from the Chinatown Night Market. I love her stuffed Cheshire Cat.

The poster was designed by Miss Soo. I've had the great pleasure of working with Eileen before. Follow her work on her blog.

Vancouver Premier of Handmade Nation

The Rise of D.I.Y., Art, Craft, and Design

Today’s crafters are no longer interested in simply cross-stitching samplers or painting floral scrolls on china. Instead, the contemporary craft movement embraces emerging artists, crafters, and designers working in traditional and nontraditional media.

In 2006, Faythe Levine traveled the country, putting 19,000 miles under her belt and visiting 15 cities to document the new wave of craft in the USA. Faythe has encapsulated this particular chapter in craft history with the documentary Handmade Nation, and an accompanying book of the same name.

With the popularity of Got Craft?, Portobello West and Etsy, it’s no surprise that craft culture is huge in Vancouver.

Handmade Nation will include a craft showcase featuring 14 local handmade artists. Photobooth Vancouver will be set up for guests to ‘show us your DIY’ and take pictures with their handmade items. Faythe Levine will also be on-hand to introduce the film and hold a Q&A session after the screening. Tickets are $20.00 in advance. The first 100 tickets sold receive a FREE swag bag. There's also a chance to WIN 2 tickets to the screening by visiting Poppytalk.

F as in Frank on Main Street, Vancouver

The new flagship store hosts its official opening this coming Friday 3rd July in the prime location of Main and Broadway, East Vancouver. Featuring an open bar, DJ, and red carpet, the party will showcase clothes from all eras, inviting you to mark the official launch of the store from 8pm-1am.
The large-scale store is packed full of thousands of one-of-a-kind vintage garments, handpicked from all over the globe, and spanning the decades from the 1900s through to the 1990s. With a century’s worth of vintage clothing to rifle through, you’re guaranteed to find a bargain. Customised kids? If you pick a piece which doesn’t quite fit, Frank’s backstage seamstresses offer a tailoring service as well as creating more modern cuts on vintage dresses and shirts.

The new store puts owners Drew and Jesse Heifetz passion and life knowledge of vintage picking. The Ontario Natives have been collecting vintage threads since they were kids, inspired by their father’s love of vintage clothing from the early 60s, as kids the brothers would jump off bales of clothes, nurturing a love for all things old. The two have been in the business for 6 years, opening their first store in Whistler just over 2 years ago and are proud to be launching the second and most innovative of the two stores in Vancouver this Friday.

Oh Canada!

"What?...I didn't know there was any Canadian Fashion?" This comment from a member of the British press who questioned an invitation to a Canadian fashion show in London in 1988. Twenty years later I would cringe if this was still the case. Luckily I see the focus on local designers being brought to the forefront. The reasons, I feel though, are more due to our ability to roll with the punches.

A few years ago governments made it easier/ cheaper to produce in China. This put alot of factories in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Montreal, out of business. This in turn made it harder for small to mid size companies to compete against the larger companies. (BTW, successful Canadian fashion companies like Club Monaco, Mac & Jac, Robeez & Jax were bought out by american companies. Guess where they produce.) Ok so now we have our small to mid size fashion houses struggling. Ok so now we have 500 fashion grads in Vancouver alone vying for less and less jobs. (Oh! Don't forget about the recession.)

Well, you can't stop a creative force as strong as a new designer and voila! Main St. and Gastown become Indie Fashion Hubs. Sustainable design, Eco Fashion, Local Designer are now synonomis with Vancouver Fashion.

So, on this Canada day, when I sing Oh Canada, I am thinking about every single Vancouver sewing factory worker, design house, fashion student, independant designer following their dream and raising children at the same time.

Now instead of hearing, "Oh, I didn't know there was any Canadian Fashion.", We are hearing, "Oh, I know where to buy Canadian Fashion."

We are stronger together so be proud about wearing Canadian!
