His approach to garment pattern making incorporates chance discovery, distance, gods-eye views, and the ability to cut fast & inaccurately without too much reference to numbers, fractions or mathematics.

If you want bed time reading for adults, you will want to get a copy of Brussles Sprouts & Unicorns by Robert Chaplin. It's in no way naughty (although the poem, "The Princess and the Pea" will put a coy smile on your face), but written with fantastic genius and wit.

At a wine tasting party, (where, by the way, he won first prize), he reads to us all. (Later he will free style to a guest's acoustic guitar riff played so hard she bleeds all over her guitar.)

I first met Robert at Pecha Kucha where he showed slides of his many ARTifacts registered in the national library. ISBN numbers and all! Robert wears a tshirt for the band SWANK. I'm wearing a top by Cohesive. (A collaborative project between Constant and Adhesif)

On Nov 18th- 21st, SFU students put on the exhibit Surveilling Public Space: Perspectives on Spectacle. I collaborated with Kwantlen fashion student Serena Neumerschitsky on our piece called: "I thought it was our little secret" and explored the prevalence of surveillance cameras in our society, how that technology is used and how it makes individuals feel.

I'm super excited to team up with 2nd year fashion student, Serena Neumerschitsky for our Surveillance art installation called: "I thought it was our little secret"

Coming from the fashion industry, clothing and the effects of fashion on how others view us is always on our mind. We wear certain things to portray to others what we want them to see. We also choose carefully when we want to hide certain things about ourselves, whether it is physical or emotional.

With the introduction of surveillance into our society, we are denied the freedom to choose what people see. We can try desperately to hide our secrets; but at what point do we stop being true to ourselves out of fear for our privacy. Will this cause us to suppress our true feelings which may ultimately lead to irrational, rebellious, behavior?

We started by looking at the prevalence of surveillance cameras in our society and looking at how that technology is used and how it makes individuals feel. So even though what the camera records is "surface", the implication is that privacy is still compromised.

To visually express this concept, we will construct a business suit out of sheer material and dress a headless male mannequin. A headless female mannequin will be dressed in a sheer blouse and shirt. Under the man’s clothing is women’s underwear. Under the woman’s clothing is what appears to be fetish wear.

It's creative people talking about creative things. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each. The creators took the name from a Japanese term for the sound of conversation ("chit-chat"). In Vancouver, the next one is on Oct. 29th at 7pm. Yours truly will be one of the speakers. Eeeeeek! Also we will be able to catch Rose Marie Cuervas of JC Studio.
The $10 tickets always sell out, so may want to get your tickets in advance at Festival Cinemas.

Putting on the Glitz

Last night the Original Costume Museum Society put on a gala dinner fundraiser and silent auction: "Putting on the Glitz: Hollywood Style 1916- 1946". This event was sold out and it was tons of fun to see the audience dressed in their very own vintage garments. Some as old as 100 years old.Ivan Sayers has been collecting historical garments for over 40 years. His personal collection of vintage and historical costumes is vast and we were very lucky to see some of the rarest and best of his collection. As he liked to put it, "Ok, I'm showing off with this piece". Each dress had a story about who wore it and how he came to be the owner. His wit and humor alone are reason to see him at the various events put on by the Original Costume Museum Society. Their goal is to establish a museum dedicated to costume and textiles here in Vancouver.1930's Gone with the Wind style gloves

Old Hastings Mill Store Fundraiser

The Old Hastings Mill Store Museum presents Ivan Sayers “The Crazy Years: 1919 to 1929 Fashion Show”. Proceeds from this event, hosted by the Native Daughters of British Columbia Post #1, will go towards the preservation of Vancouver’s oldest building. The Old Hastings Mill Store, built in 1865, is the last surviving building from the 1886 fire that destroyed the city. This fundraiser takes place Saturday, October 17, 200, 2:00 pm at the Old Mill Store, 1575 Alma Street, Vancouver. There will also be refreshments and a silent auction. Tickets are $19. Dressers in the City

Vancouver has been overrun with bears, cows and eagles; now Fashion High is getting in on the action with the Dressers in the City campaign. Over the course of 10 days, dressers will pop up on some of the busiest street corners in Vancouver. They will be decorated by FH members, feature the Fashion High web address and the drawers will be filled with FH stickers and member business cards. It’s a fun and exciting way to publicize FH members.

This is the dresser that Keith Arbuthnot and I created for the "Dressers in the City" Media stunt. Keith is a visual artist and costumer in Vancouver and I feel fery lucky to have collaborated on this project that is promoting the local designers of Next Door Style.Last night the Next Door Style Dresser was placed outside of the Jacqueline Conoir show in China Town. I loved the city lights reflecting off the rainy streets reflecting off the dresser!

I can't believe I missed this amazing event today at Trout Lake Park.

How fun it would have been to dress up as my favourite character and join Alice as she meets Humpty Dumpty, has Tea with the Mad Hatter, plays croquet with the Queen of Hearts, swings on the flying trapeze, and dances the Lobster Quadrille to the fabulous sounds of Toot-A-Lute, The Carnival Band, Gamelan Madu Sari, and the End Tree.

My friend Diana did an excellent job of dressing up as Alice with her white dress from Zara and striped socks from the Chinatown Night Market. I love her stuffed Cheshire Cat.

The poster was designed by Miss Soo. I've had the great pleasure of working with Eileen before. Follow her work on her blog.

YouthCO AIDS Society is proud to announce “Acquired Taste: A Carnival of
Sensations!” This three-ringed circus arrives in Vancouver for ONE NIGHT

The Rise of D.I.Y., Art, Craft, and Design

Today’s crafters are no longer interested in simply cross-stitching samplers or painting floral scrolls on china. Instead, the contemporary craft movement embraces emerging artists, crafters, and designers working in traditional and nontraditional media.

In 2006, Faythe Levine traveled the country, putting 19,000 miles under her belt and visiting 15 cities to document the new wave of craft in the USA. Faythe has encapsulated this particular chapter in craft history with the documentary Handmade Nation, and an accompanying book of the same name.

With the popularity of Got Craft?, Portobello West and Etsy, it’s no surprise that craft culture is huge in Vancouver.

Handmade Nation will include a craft showcase featuring 14 local handmade artists. Photobooth Vancouver will be set up for guests to ‘show us your DIY’ and take pictures with their handmade items. Faythe Levine will also be on-hand to introduce the film and hold a Q&A session after the screening. Tickets are $20.00 in advance. The first 100 tickets sold receive a FREE swag bag. "What?...I didn't know there was any Canadian Fashion?" This comment from a member of the British press who questioned an invitation to a Canadian fashion show in London in 1988. Twenty years later I would cringe if this was still the case. Luckily I see the focus on local designers being brought to the forefront. The reasons, I feel though, are more due to our ability to roll with the punches.

A few years ago governments made it easier/ cheaper to produce in China. This put alot of factories in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Montreal, out of business. This in turn made it harder for small to mid size companies to compete against the larger companies. (BTW, successful Canadian fashion companies like Club Monaco, Mac & Jac, Robeez & Jax were bought out by american companies. Guess where they produce.) Ok so now we have our small to mid size fashion houses struggling. Ok so now we have 500 fashion grads in Vancouver alone vying for less and less jobs. (Oh! Don't forget about the recession.)

Well, you can't stop a creative force as strong as a new designer and voila! Main St. and Gastown become Indie Fashion Hubs. Sustainable design, Eco Fashion, Local Designer are now synonomis with Vancouver Fashion.

So, on this Canada day, when I sing Oh Canada, I am thinking about every single Vancouver sewing factory worker, design house, fashion student, independant designer following their dream and raising children at the same time.

Now instead of hearing, "Oh, I didn't know there was any Canadian Fashion.", We are hearing, "Oh, I know where to buy Canadian Fashion."

We are stronger together so be proud about wearing Canadian!

For Earth Day I am making a list of any sustainable clothing companies in Vancouver and how to find them.

#1 - www.nextdoorstyle.com is an online store that sells sustainable designed fashion and accessories. Everything on the site is sustainable because it is made locally thereby reducing the carbon footprint. You can find clothing made of eco fabrics or handmade jewelry made of reclaimed components. Saturday night, worked late, no date. What's a girl to do? Show up at an art show opening by herself, duh! I almost turned around when I saw the line up at El Kartel. But it moved fast as the doorman kept the place within fire code...(although I doubt it) Head down, keeping to myself, not feeling insecure at all until some latino esl student walking by yells at me, "Hey baby, don't be sad, it's Saturday night!" Like, WTF?! That pisses me off.

Anyway, once inside, "Excusemepardonme sorry'scusemeoopssorry" Ahh finally, a familiar face...

Connie Laalo is a 2009 Kwantlen University Fashion Design and Technology Graduate. Wednesday was "The Show" at the River Rock Casino where friends, family, industry and media gathered to see who the up and coming designers were. Connie's line of playful intimates was designed and sewn by Connie herself. What I don't think a lot of people realized is that she actually designed the print and created the fabric for her line. My favourite design of the whole show was actually the dress that she wore herself. (It took 5 meters of crinoline to make that skirt!) The hat she also created.

Yes, I'm still talking about the awesomeness that was Rock Revolution almost a month ago! The fashion show featured clothing from Firetrap, Boys' Co. and Freshman. But the star attraction was Melissa Ferreira's clothing line: "Adhesif". Melissa created glam rock inspired outfits especially for this show. She deconstructed, reconstructed, pinned, ripped and painted each creation herself. Check out the video!

OMG I could right an infommercial right now about this mascara, but it's pretty much solved every issue I have with mascara.
